Varnish on white gelcoat

Post by Dave Stump »

Help! Does anyone have a good method (read that chemical solution) to remove varnish a well meaning yard worker dripped all over the deck when varnishing the brightwork on my Capedory 30 "Hanalei". The brightwork looks great, but the decks don't.

The most proven method in this case of removing unwanted drips, runs and spills of the varnish is not to pay the yard for the job of varnishing your teak until the mess is cleaned up by the worker responsible for the sloppiness!

Can't argue with Ed, but for your info in case you do it to yourself sometime you can get it up. If it's fairly fresh a little acetone or liquid sandpaper on a rag may do it. If it's well hardened get one of the little pull scrapers at the local paint store make sure it's really sharp and then gently pull across being careful not to dig into the gelcoat. You may have to polish the gelcoat with a little polishing compound after the surgery.

When it is dry a single edge razor will oftern slide under it and remove it nicely.

Dave: Use Easy Off Oven Cleaner (NaOH). Spray on, let sit for 5min or so then scrub with a Scotch Pad and rinse well with water. I used a dilute vinegar solution to make sure the alkali is neutralized. Does not toch the gel coat. I used it successfully to remove a painted name on the stern of my 25D.

A heat gun will do the trick but you must be careful not to ruin the new varnish or the deck. Perhaps a "heat delector" i.e peice of metal or such will sheild the varnish from the heat gun, can't let that get too hot and be careful and wear a glove while holding the "deflector". Scrape the "deck varnish" lightly as you heat it and it will come off.

Try acetone use sparingly on a rag worked great on mine, and did not harm gel coat
