I have developed or just noticed a drip- very slow- coming from behind the impellor housing, back where the the housing narrows, there is a hole there, but I don't remember it dripping before. Any advice?

I think that means that the seal has worn out and needs to be replaced...Bruce Janssen wrote: I have developed or just noticed a drip- very slow- coming from behind the impellor housing, back where the the housing narrows, there is a hole there, but I don't remember it dripping before. Any advice?
PS has anyone replaced the impeller on a ysm8?
I think you need to take the pump off..
Has anyone had the experience in using a speed kit? it is supposed to allow you to take off the cover using thumb nuts///

Speedseal Re: impellor drip 25D
There have been some recent enthusiastic reports on the speedseal. For testimonials from the manuafacturer, check out their web site via the link below. I plan to order mine tomorrow morning.

The mechanics just changed my impeller last week. They also put on a new starter motor and changed all the filters. They did take the pump off. Then again they took the alternator off so they could put on the new starter. I think you have to take the pump off but I think that's not a big deal to do.

Re: impellor drip 25D
I have a YSB 8 and had a similar slight leak. I waited a few weeks and pulled the pump ( remove two tapped bolts). I wasn't quite sure how it came apart, it seemd to be stuck together. I took it to the yanmar dealer and got the seal kit. But when they took it apart, the leak had ruined the bearings and scored the impeller shaft. They had to rebuild it. But it was less than a new and for all practical purposes works and has new working parts.
The speed seal probably will not work because the pump is driven by a pulley and belt, essentially blocking access to the cover plate and screws.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have a bad seal; as others have suggested, that might mean a rebuild.
Your local Yanmar dealer can get you all the parts, or do the rebuild for you. You need to take the cover off, pull the impeller and shaft to get to the seal, so in any event you will want to replace the impellor and cover gasket, and you will likely strip the heads on at least two of the cover plate screws, so order them up as well.
Be careful removing the pump from the engine - most of the hoses are no longer available from Yanmar, and appear to be metric - 20 and 24 mm ID.
I considered a Speedseal, and it seems to be a great idea, but removing the pump is easy enough (two bolts and two hose clamps).
