DAVIS TILLER TAMER INSTALLATION ???

Post by les bloom »

Any one have any experience or commments about installing a DAVIS
TILLER TAMER on a TYPHOON? What to do or not to do? Also concerned about losing cushion space at the after end of the cockpit, where it
meets the tramsom area.

Les- I was considering installing one of these myself, and had similar concerns. I'd have to engineer some way to keep the line taught when raising and lowering the tiller. Cusion space is at a premium in a Ty, but worth the sacrifice if it would hold her steady when I need to run below to the icebox. Any info would be appreciated as to how practical one of these is in a Typhoon.

I installed a tiller tamer on a Precision 21 that I had. My only caution is against depending on the Tiller Tamer to keep your rudder still on a mooring. Mine frayed to the breaking point with all of the minute slatting back and forth. Part of the problem was with the angle of the installed lines but it would be well to be aware of the possibility.

There's another manufacturer of something similar. Here's the link:

Their website shows pics of one rigged up to a Ty.

Cheers!

My typhoon had the Davis Tiller Tamer already installed when I bought it. It is mounted on the tiller top with fairleads on the side teak board at the end of the cockpit about 1" above the rear deck with a cam cleat behind it. The lines are cut with only 4" excess. It does not have to be 'ready' all of the time. I let the lines lay the cockpit floor until I need it. It only take a few seconds to set. This will save your cushion space. In port, secure your tiller lines to the jib cleats.

Typhoon Tiller-Stay

Post by Mike Wainfeld »

That's my Typhoon in the Tiller-Stay website. I've been using this device for the past 3 seasons, and it works well without taking up any cockpit space. Robin Tiesler, who sells the tiller-stay, made a few modifications for the Ty-the edges of the PVC tube are beveled so they do not catch on the edges of the cockpit seats, and the piece on the tiller is shimmed to a better angle.

Sailors have been lashing their tillers for hundreds of years. What do these gadgets do that a short length of (free) line won't do as well?

The benefit of these devices is that they are quickly and easily adjustable port to starboard, and can be quickly released. This is probably more of an advantage on a smaller boat that does not track as steadily as a larger boat.

If you use a rolling hitch, adjustments in a line are easy to make. The hitch only holds under tension and otherwise slides. Or, put a loop of line over the tiller and secure the other end to a small cleat. I've done that using the jib sheet cleats.

With a bit of weather helm, the tiller only needs to be held in place from the windward side.

Does anyone have any experiance with a Tiller Tamer on a CD27. My question is two fold. Does It work better than just lashing the tiller with a line and is it worth going through the trouble of installation. And if so is it easy to install without sacraficing cockpit space.

Any information at all will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks for your input.
