My wife and I purchased a CD25D this winter and are learning to sail it this summer. We used the jiffy reefing system outlined in the 25D manual but can't figure how to get the second reef in on top of the first reef.
What would cause a slight list to port with us living on it, fuel, water, ice, gear. It has the same slight list empty.
Thanks for your help,

Is your boom set up for the 2nd jiffy reef? My CD27 has a mainsail set up for 2 jiffy reefs but the boom only had one cheek block and one cleat on it. I added another cheek block for the second reef and another cleat also to the boom. Of course if the original cleat is large enough you might be able to get the second reef line cleated there with the first. But you'll need a 2nd cheek block, whether on a track on the boom or screwed directly into the boom forward of the cheek block of the first reef is up to you.
Many boats don't sit level in the water. They often list a little to one side. Full water tanks, fuel tanks, position of other weight being off center can cause a slight list. There are other reasons that were discussed on this board about a year ago if memory serves.
Hope this helps.

Re: list
Joe,
Our CD33, Maggie Rose, also tends to list to port. The batteries, stove and holding tank are all on the port side; fresh water tanks and fuel to starboard. We can trim it up as we provision, but the list returns as we cruise. We try to minimize the list, but not to the point of stowing things where they are so much trouble to retrieve that you don't use them. Stowing things on a sailboat is an art that we never stop trying to perfect. Jo

Re: reefng and list
Dear Joe,
My CD25D, hull #2 always had a slight list too. I'm not sure if was from the batteries or what. Even a full tank of water and my heavy tool box in the quarter berth did not totally correct the problem.
As far as the second reef goes, you need to purchase the pad eye, the cheek block and a cleat and mount these to the boom in the appropriate locations. I color coordinated the first and second reef lines to make identification quick.
A trick that I like, especially when you are short handed, is to raise the main sail in the slip, take the reef, then lower the sail and tie it in place with sail ties. This way, when you take up the sail, the sail is pre reefed. It is always to easier to reef while you are in the slip, than on the deck of a bouncing deck.
Enjoy your 25D! You have one heckuva a boat!

Re: reefng and list
We purchased our '85 25D last fall. The previous owner told us the listing he noticed was corrected when he purchased two gel batteries, placing one on the preexisting port battery platform and the second on the starboard side in a neat battery box he constructed in the unused area under the sink in the head area. The boat does not list at all, whether it has full water tank or not.
