Looking at a 1977 TY. Rudder is open on lower rear edge. Local glass guru says its made of wood. Is this correct?
If so does anyone have a template to rebuild one?
Thanks Sean

TY rudder is made of wood? Anyone have a template?
Moderator: Jim Walsh
Can it be repaired?
They get beat up like that from a grounding. Usually you can glass the opening closed.

Rudder Repair/replacement
Sean:
I have to addmit that I do not know if it is wood or not. My opioun is that it is not wood, but a hard foam core.
We have repaired several sailboat rudders including the rudder on my Wright/Allied 40(past boat). If the rudder is splitting from grounding, we would glass the rudder with kevlar and epoxy.
I could build you a rudder complete (with a foam core) and a bronze shaft. The price of the rudder would be $647.00. This would be an exact replacement rudder. I would be glad to repair your existing rudder. Estimated cost is $175.00. This would be kevlar/epoxy and faired ready for botom paint.
Let me know if I can help you.

Re: TY rudder is made of wood? Anyone have a template?
Sean -
I had expected maybe some of the more knowledgeable TY guru's on this site might answer your question whether the rudder has a wood core. I'm not sure, since my rudder never split, however I thought it was simply glass around a wire frame - which is what the diagram of a TY rudder in the 1978 CD manual shows. When I first bought my TY I did drill two small holes thru the rudder to see if the rudder had any water in it, (which it didn't and I closed the holes with epoxy). Anyway, when I drilled the holes, the drill bit didn't show I had gone through any wood, so I'm not sure if it has a wood core or not.
Good luck.
