CD 25 halyards

My CD 25 "Lucille" has an all rope main halyard and a rope and wire headsail halyard. I would like to change the jib halyard to all rope when I replace the halyards but I don't remember if the sheave throat is the same size for both or if one is narrower than the other. Short of going up the mast or dropping the mast I thought the vast knowledge of the august group might be of assistance. Can anyone tell me if I need to change the sheave for the headsail? Jon, anyone?

If the sheeve can handle wire & rope is would normally have a groove for the wire & the rope passes across the big part of the sheeve. You can test this by tying an extension on the rope part & pull the wire until the rope is through the sheeve

The sheaves on Sovereign are all the same size, but she is a '78 and has always had all rope halyards. I'm really not sure what is up top on other year boats. I like John's idea of running the rope through it and judging the resistance felt. Either way, I vote for roller furling!

Roller furling is next season hopefully with a new 135% or 150% headsail. Right now the halyards are in serious need of replacement and I want to do it all from the deck with the mast in place if possible. I also want to get rid of the wire. Thanks to all for the input.

Thanks Bill, that is just what I was hoping to hear. What size halyards did you use? I am looking at 3/8 inch Sta-set or equal. I am going to make them long enough to lead back to the cockpit.

3/8 sounds right. I used sta-set also. I'll double check today on size when I go to the boat.

I just replaced my old rope main halyard with a new 3/8 rope. The four sheaves in my 74 CD25 are all the same size. Next time the mast is down remember to lubricate the whole assembly which can best be done by disassembly. When you buy a genoa go for the 150%. You can always roll in a little if necessary.
