Is anybody aware of a manual written in plain english for dummies that covers all the basics? I saw a Yanmar service manual apparently written for a mechanic and was lost after a page and a half.

Try Nigel Calder's book on boat mechanical systems. It has a good section on how diesels work, troubleshooting the engines, and maitenance. It should complement the Yanmar manual enough to understand how this applies to your engine.
