When guests try to put companionway boards in, they always put them in with the inside facing out. (Shouldn't they at least get it right 50% of the time?) It occured to me that I could mark the outside of the boards somehow, but I don't want to stencil "THIS SIDE OUT" on the boards. Maybe the CD logo - not too big - routed into the boards? Does anyone know where I could get an authentic rendition of the logo to trace over? Or tasteful bronze letters to set into the wood? Has anyone done something like this? Thanks.

Re: CD logo
or "OOOPS". or stand over them w/ a whip. Will learn quickly.
Really, though, get a copy or create it in your favorite graphics program (Paint, even) and print. all you need is a stencil, so you can print each letter on a separate page and assemble on the wood, the way you like it. Get a piece of plywood to try it out first (or however many times to get it perfect). Route very lightly, not too deep. Can always put a little stain to darken or a little teak cleaner (see earlier threads on cleaning) to lighten, to contrast from surroundings. Try on some teak samples first.

Chris,
How about letting the boards weather to the point where it is obvioius? I can tell the difference on Parfait and they really aren't that bad. Of course, crew training would still be necessary. "Shiny side in" might suffice, or "Dullards out."
Another thought would be to simply do a single line drawing of a CD across all three(?) boards. How about arrows on the top edge pointing "out"?
I have art work for the builder's plates that you might use to cut a stencil of the hull with "Cape Dory Yachts" across it. It is in Microsoft Word and I can send it or the ungrouped version, which is a patchwork of pieces, if you want to play with it. Don't ask why I used Word, it was there and, believe it or not, sufficient.
Let me know if you want a copy. I probably can send you one specific to your boat model if you like.

Re: CD logo
No logos on my boards, but a very simple solution instead. Each board has a slight "dimple" drilled into the inside face of the board about dead center. They're only about 1/16" deep. When guests or kids (or I) put the boards in I repeat "dimple goes inside." The indentation has as added advantage: When putting the boards in in the darkness, you can feel for which side goes in. But you could also do that with a relief logo!

Re: CD logo
We had the same problem until last fall when I put a refresher coat of cetol on. I put a glossy finish on the inside and satin on the outside. No more mistates and the glossy finish looks wonderful.

Re: CD logo
How about the more obvious..each board is bevel cut, and aligned to shed rain. We just memorized the idea that rain water should be shed, therefore the slope should go outside the boat.
I do like that idea of a line drawing of the boat drawn on the exterior, maybe cut with a hot knife or wood burning tool into the wood then stained a darker brown or black. That would look classy. Limit the amount of detail of course.
This can be done easily with many graphics programs. They offer a filter that will create a line drawing of virtually any shape or picture.. I have done this with the crews tee shirts, and even Christmas Gifts like mouse pads etc. ie; put a graphic of the persons boat on the pad with their boat name, but use a filter that makes a line drawing of it. Photoshop of course does this, but I have probably 6 other graphics programs that will also. Then you can size it precisely for your needs too.
Cheers!

Re: CD Logo and Hull Plate Graphic
Chris,
This is the graphic for the hull plate for your CD33:
<IMG SRC="http://www.toolworks.com/cdsoa/hullplates/cd33.jpg">
The logo is the half hull portion of what you see on the graphic minus "Cape Dory Yachts".
You'll also find the Cape Dory logo on the cover of your user's manual. If you don't have a user's manual, you can download it from the "Where to Look" page on this website.
The manual's logo graphic follows:
<IMG SRC="http://www.toolworks.com/cdsoa/hullplates/manlogo.JPG">
To download these graphics to your computer, simply Right-Click on the graphic you want then select "Save Image As" from the resulting menu, navigate to the appropriate folder, and click on Save.

Re: CD logo
On Grendel, the outside was much more worn than the inside. so I refinished the outside only with Cetol.Chris Scheck wrote: No logo needed. Refinish the outside only.
Now I tell people "Light Side out"

Re: CD logo
Chris, I've applied VELCRO to the backside of my boards. I stow then on the vertical wood pannels just below the berts. It works great. When I close the boat up I use the "VELCRO SIDE IN" mental reminder. If you use this, make sure which piece of the velcro you install where. The hooks should be on the boards because some clothing would stick to it if its under the berth.

Re: CD logo
Thanks to all who had ideas about marking the outside of the companionway boards -- especially Catherine. I've made my decision -- I'm going to laser-engrave the hull profile from the front page of the owner's manual into the middle board. No, I don't have a laser in my basement. After some searching around Newport RI (but not much!) I found Ocean Instrumentation (oceaninlay.com) They specialize in laser engraving very ornate designs in table tops and instrument panels... generally on larger boats than a CD33! However, they are very agreeable folks and will entertain requests for smaller jobs. The most cost-effective way to go is to send them a file of the desired design. The laser will work directly from your file.
