Outboard size for CD25

Post by Barry Blount »

I would like to know if a short shaft (15") is OK for my CD 25. I
now have a 9.9 Evinrude Sailmaster and the prop seems awfully deep.
Also, is 9.9 enough ?
New at this but loving it.

Barry,

A 15" will work, but only if you lower the motor mount. Otherwise a 20" should be fine. A 9.9 is actually on the high end for power; the general range is 5-10hp. It just depends on how much weight you want back there (and to lift to clear a tangle or store) and how much power you want.

There are pictures of a 15" on a CD25 on my website linked below.

All the best,

We powered our Pearson Triton (28.5', 8500#s, 8' beam, 4' draft) with a Nissan 8 hp. It drove it at hull speed in most conditions at 2/3rds throttle. It was a 2 cycle. I'm sure 9.9 is more than enough for a CD25. I'd look for a 5 hp 2 cycle. Less weight. Less cost. We almost did a 5 hp on our Triton but were convinced by someone that the 8 hp would be "smoother" since it has 2 cylinders. We subsequenjtly got diesel fever and put in a 10 hp Farrymann diesel.

I currently run a 15" 9.9HP Johnson(trolling motor from my power boat) on my CD25 in the lazarrette. Its a tight fit and heavy(78 lbs). Collects green slime even though sprayed with engine antifouling paint. Recently had 25increasing to 35 knot winds. Power was more than enough almost too much as it wants to plane the displacement hull. When I step on the bow the exhaust comes out of the water making me think that "Is my engine receiving cooling water?" The guy down the slips uses a Nissan 5hp 20" 4 stroke and fits well. Good power.quiet and little fuel consumption. Weighs only 55lbs(light enough to pull out if you don't want it sitting in the water. Another choice is to use a transom bracket. I will purchase one soon. The engine you have is fine. Good luck!
