7 Day Release Tape, that won't, Help!

7 Day Release Tape, that won't, Help!
I am learning a hard lesson on masking tape quality and now I need help. I taped up Alcyone to apply a refresher coat of Cetol. I used a 3M Blue 7 day release tape for half the job and an unknown brand (Home Depot), also Blue 7 day release. Well 6 raining days later, the 3M came off like a breeze, the Home Depot brand . . . is simply refusing to come off.
We have tried 3M Adhesive Remover and Acetone with no results. Even with a razor blade (which I hate using), the tape simply tears into small strips. What small pieces we are getting off are leaving a miserable, sticky residue. The Acetone, with considerable effort does remove the residue. Any recommendations would be helpful. She is used to being the prettiest gal in the marina and this ugly tape is hurting her ego.

This is bad news, indeed. The same thing happend to me and it took the better part of the summer to rectify. I ended up removing small sections at a time with a razor blade and acetone. But it took a LONG time and was somewhat embarassing.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging.

Two things come to mind, neither have been applied to your situation to my knowledge:
1) Auto Film Remover which you can get at your auto paint supply shop.
2) Lighter Fluid for the Zippo you probably had once a long time ago.
Try a little and see what happens.

This spring, needing a lot of tape,I also bought some of that home depot tape. panting my boot stripe, what with the weather and life just getting in the way, I left the tape on for 30 days! Believe it or not it came right off. I can't say for sure, but just hearing your story, i'm sure it wasn't the home depot tape. I would try lacquer thinner and would also register a complaint with home depot.

Been There. Done That.
Try stuff called "Goo Off" Comes in a yellow can with red lettering. Use liberally and then try a plastic scraper (if you are afraid of the blade). I now use 3M fine line tape for most applications -- it's pretty expensive but it ALWAYS comes off (even when it gets wet).

Re: 7 Day Release Tape, that won't, Help!
Jim,
See if you can find Toluol (I think that is how it is spelled) and scrub with an old kitchen scrubbing pad that you use for pots and pans. Those two things, along with elbow grease should take that gunk off.
I have found that UV and water destroy the bond between the paper and the glue. Best to remove the same day applied.
Good Luck,

Re: 7 Day Release Tape, that won't, Help!
Partial success achieved! With the help of a hair dryer and a plastic scrapper, I have gotten most of the tape off (T-Storms halted the progress). Much of the goop still remains and is resisting everything I’m slopping on it. Thanks to all for the various suggestions. I suspect I will have tried them all before I’m done. I will report what eventually works.

Jim,
I had to remove duct tape residue last spring. Nothing worked, then I tried putting baby powder on the residue. I rubbed it into the tape residue and then it scraped off without too much trouble using a putty knife or a dull chisel. Hope it works for you! Good luck!

I mistakenly left some 3M blue on all winter and just wiped on good old mineral spirits let it sit for ten minutes the tape came right off.Jim Newton wrote: I am learning a hard lesson on masking tape quality and now I need help.
