Whisker Pole on a TY
Has anyone ever heard of using a Whisker Pole on a TY? I appreciate all of the excellent knowledge shared on this board.....

Re: Whisker Pole on a TY
I just bought a small Forespar whisker pole to use on my Ty. I've often sailed the boat wing on wing without the pole, but I'm sure it would help. Last summer I sailed on an O'Day Mariner, also 19', but lighter and having a centerboard; and whisker poles are always used when racing downwind. My eventual plan is to use an asymmetrical spinnaker, which I think may be the best downwind singlehanded rig. I'll let you know how the pole works.

Re: Whisker Pole on a TY
Mike,
Could you give more a little more detail on any suggestions about installing the whisker pole? I am still pretty new to boat owning.
Also, when you do go ahead with the spinnaker, I'd be really interested to hear how you rig the TY and how well it works. Spinnakers still seem a bit over my level of sailing comfort right now.
thanks again for all your help.

Re: Whisker Pole on a TY
sean,
if your ty does not have a spinnaker car track and a spinnaker pad eye car for the inboard end of the whisker pole on the leading edge of the mast, by the time you buy all that and get it installed, you might as well invest in an asymmetrical spinnaker. no pole involved, works like a big genoa and is easy to fly. depending on who you buy the sail from, sail-sheets-halyard-halyard block will run you about $400.00. you can fly this sail from a close reach to a broad reach and the ride is worth the investment.
if you do have the track and pad eye, buy the whisker pole (forespar has a small one that works good for the ty) and wing out the genoa. this will be good for a few years until you get itchy for that asymmetrical!

Re: Whisker Pole on a TY
I JUST BOUGHT AN ASYMETRICAL ABOUT $600
HARKEN HARDWARE, INCLUDING HEXARATCHETS AND CAM CLEATS, AND LINES SET ME BACK ANOTHER 400, BUT THE RIDE IS WELL WORTH IT

Sloop John and AL (et al.)
Can you recommend any sail lofts in the NE (RI)area? How would I figure out the sail dimensions? Finally, I have never sailed a boat with a asym spinnaker....I certainly don't want to get out of my league....any thoughts for a spinnaker rookie.
Thanks again for all your help...this stuff is invaluable.

Re: Whisker Pole on a TY
The only thing involved in installing the whisker pole is mounting the eye which comes with it to the front of the mast. The pole has one end which clips to the eye and a spike on the other which goes thru the grommet on the clew of the jib. The asymmetric spinnakers discussed above are "poleless", and should be easier to fly than a conventional spinnaker. They also require less hardware-topping lift, guys etc.

Sean,
Sounds like an Asym would be a lot of fun! Now you've got me thinking...
My Ty came with a whisker pole, and I use it a lot. It works great, is simple to get hooked up and you just let 'er sail once it's in.
