I was telling Don Carr the other day that I thought that the block that rides the traveler on Hanalei looked as if it should consist not of just the block, but a block with swivel becket. When close hauled, the sheet doesn't feed fair through the block. The sheet actually rubs against one side of the sheave.
Has anyone else noted this, and what did you do? I'm thinking of buying a swivel "becket" for the block. This would assure that the sheet leads fairly through the block at all points of sail. What do you think???

Re: Traveler on a CD-30....????
Dave,
I posted a reply earlier but it is gone. So if you get a double reply I apologize. I just replaced all the blocks on my CD30 with swivel blocks. The problem I had was the single block mounted furthest aft on the boom was spinning. This caused the main sheet to twist around itself and caused binding. I exchanged the single block for a non swivel type. This solved the problem. The two double blocks are now swivel types and it works very well.
Good Luck,

Re: Traveler on a CD-30....????
Dave,
Last year I removed the nico? traveler system onboard my cd 30, I left the mounting pod. I replaced it with the schaefer 1 1/2" track which they need the measurements to match the sprung arch of the pod. excellent job of matching. from there I used the schaefer 72-83 traveler car,74-83 & 73-84 the double sheave/cam cleat, traveler sheets run to wheel when under way, coiled on cabin top when not in use. that system gave me a 3-1 purchase on the traveler. a huge improvement on the trimability of the main.
The bigger improvement happened afterwords. Brian Toss from port townsend, Wa. came to Portland to tune rigs in the area, mine was one of them. Afterwords he gave me suggestions on how to achieve a more "fair lead" on the main sheet system (the same as on the staysail.)
This is what I did from his imput.
I removed the sheet altogeather as it was twisting and chafing on the sheaves. Removed the old blocks with their cracked and stubburn sheaves. Replaced them all with the schaefer 500 s.s. series, and here is where it changed.
the block attached to traveler car is a double with becket.the bitter end of sheet is no longer tied to the starboard padeye but to the becket of that double block. there it runs to the second double block on boom same placement as old block. sheet then runs to a single block (swivel) mounted forward on boom about 16 " from the aft block, this from the second sheave on traveler block.. from here (this is where it changes again)
sheet goes to a spring block mounted forward of companion way hatch cover, port to cheek block, finishing to winch and cam cleat.
What this has done is remove chafing/sheave and twist in sheet leading to old starboard padeye (bitter end.) Also acts as minor boom vang certainly not the real thing but it does remove some boom twist when running.
It was a huge improvement over old system. sheet runs clean and smooth through the whole affair. Many thanks to Brian Toss for those freebies Ben
