CD 25 outboard choice... the final word?

Post by Evan »

After searching for any and all info on this board and reviewing all discussions re: best outboard for a CD25, I am still at a loss as to which is best. My main concerns are engine well fit (surprise!) and engine weight. My only requirements are that the engine be a 4-stroke and that I be able to run it with the hatch down. I would LOVE to hear from any CD25 owners who have had success with a 4-stroke 6-8 HP engine which also did NOT require alterations to the motor well, mounting bracket, etc. in any way. Does such an outboard exist?! Thanks to all...

We used to power our Pearson Triton (28.5', 8500#s, 8' beam) with a 8 hp Nissan. It pushed it at hull speed at 2/3rds throttle. For a CD 25, a 5 hp ought t obe sufficient. Especially if a 4 cycle since they supposedly have more oomph than 2 cycle. Whether they will run with hatch closed may depend on whether you provdie alternate fresh air source. Mike

Never final but see what the past tells you

Look (search) the archives for this. Last year there was many a discussions on this and many solutions (not only fresh air in, but getting the exhaust out) to this. Seems that trying some or all of the ideas, many were able to easily run w/ the hatch down. Believe there were modifications to make life easier w/ the outboard, too.

I have a 1980 CD25 fitted with a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust engine. It fits in well with ine small adjsutment to bracket. I took out the top 2 bolts to the mounting bracket (my bracket is 1 1/2" X 6" Oak mounted on 1" angle iron) and rotated it about an inch. This allowed for clearance in the rear. To run with lid down you must vent the engine exhaust (there is a small exhaust vent well above the waterline at the rear of all outboards) using a thru hull fitting and flexible tubing (I use plastic). thru hull must be mounted on either side of engine well. You will play hell getting an exhaust adapter to mount on engine case. I went to an A/C repair place and bought 6" of tubing and epoxied it into exhaust vent. You may have to drill a hole if vent is not round. I used aluminium epoxy from a car parts store. If you don't vent, then exhaust is sucked into carb and engine stalls.By the way, this pushes this boat at hull speed. I can run up and down the Hudson River with no trouble. I also have a friend with a 8hp with no mods..
