Does anyone know what brand hinges and hasp will fit on the TY cockpit hatches. The short butt are not long enough to pass over the 1/2 inch space between the seat and hatch. Will the lip on the hatch rub on the inner verticle part of the opening in the seat, does the hatch lip need to be ground down? Getting closer to launching but the list of things to do correctly seems to get longer. Thanks for any help again. jb

cockpit hinges for TY

Re: cockpit hinges for TY
I used some of the short butt hinges on my Ty and it has worked fairly well. An option that I didn't consider but would probably try (if I hadn't already installed the hinges) is to work either a short bungie cord from the inside of the seat locker lid to the inside of the locker or rig a line to a cleat or such directly inside the companionway hatch that could be attached to the locker lid. It will be interesting to see what other ideas there are out there. As it is now, mine have no latches so are free to lift up which has always been a concern of mine.
Good luck with it.

Re: cockpit hinges for TY... an option
Instead of securing the lids why not made a pair from wood. Any ideas as to construction and material? I think they give the Ty's a more traditional look. And you can leave the others safely on shore.

Jim,
The archives has a lot of good info on this subject. I used the stainless hinge with different length leaves and turned the hinge over so that the hinge pin is down and fits into the space between the lid and the back of the seat. This keeps the pin from chafing the cockpit cushion. I attached the hinge with pan head screws for a low profile. The edge of the lid will need to be filed down some so it doesn't stick when operating. We glued a 5/8 " mahogany board to the underside of the lid and used a brass barrel bolt underneath to secure the lids closed.
Cheers,
Robert

Re: cockpit hinges for TY
I used a 3/8" solid brass piano hinge and fastened it to the cover and the edge of the bench plastic mold with flat heade machine screws. It worked beautifully. I used a solid brass strap lock with a built in hook to hold the strap in the closed position. I retained the line internal lock system with the jam cleat to lock the cover down for security and more serious sailing conditions.Jim Bierwert wrote: Does anyone know what brand hinges and hasp will fit on the TY cockpit hatches.
