Bringing her home from Pt. Judith to New Haven CT

Post by John Laton »

I've done some sailing years ago (seat of pants)on CT rivers and LI sound)with a small 18' sloop. Quite frankly this trip is making me a bit nervous..New waters / new boat. Anyone with experience have some words of advice?? Anchorages around Fishers Island? Encouragment? Sell the boat and book a cruise?? I bought the CD25 for what I believed were all the right reasons, I guess I'll find out.

Leaving Pt Judith marina Next Friday.. hope to make it in 2-3 days.

In preparation I bought a new engine (and of course a bible) just to play it safe !

Thanks to all for what I have learned on this board !

John

Just go with the weather and the currents (don't try to buck either)

We passed by Pt. Judith on our way from Maryland to Maine last month on our CD-30 and the sailing is great. My recommendations for places near Fisher Island are Watch Hill and Mystic Seaport. Both good places to go that are protected any weather.

Enjoy the sail. You bought a great boat.

DO NOT I SAY......... DO NOT BOOK A CRUISE!!!!!!!!!

Post by Michael Heintz »

Just about a year ago today I bought "Macht Nichts" a CD 30 MK II.

Bought her in Deltasville VA on the Chesapeake. I live in CT.

I felt similar to how you feel, I have had a fair amount of experience, but was faced with a new boat foreign waters, i.e., the bay, the canal the river and finally up the coast of NJ, thru NYC and up Long Island sound to home in Norwalk, CT.

Just go for it!!!!!! Enjoy and appreciate that your in a Great Boat, Needless to say do your prep, watch your weather, but then enjoy the ride!!!!!!! I was just reflecting on how much I enjoyed my trip of bringing her up.!!!!!!!

DO NOT I SAY......... DO NOT BOOK A CRUISE!!!!!!!!!

This is an easy trip! But one proviso: Don't buck the tide!

Repeat: Don't buck the tide! Leave Pt. Judith at low tide. then head west. By the time you hit the Race you may be doing 7-8 kts over ground. Take a GPS so you can experience the thrill! :-)) Pt Judith to Duck I. or the CT River is an easy day this way. I did it in '99.

In a trip like this, experiment with setting the sails and letting the boat sail herself with a lashed tiller, or some other type of self steering. Then you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

Watch the tide. Enjoy the ride.

Best Wishes from the west bank of the Quinnipiac.

John;
In agreement with the others, don't buck the tide. Come through the
Watch Hill passage and you could pick up a mooring in Noank (Mystic).
Pt. Judith to Watch Hill is only about 10 nm so assuming fair tide it should only be about 2 hours plus 45 mins to Mystic. New Haven is roughly 45-48 nm from Mystic and should be a pleasant days sail.
If you have any doubts, don't go outside Fishers Island and cut back through the race as it can be a very nasty place. The CD25 will handle more than you. Enjoy the trip. For planning purposes the boat will average about 5.2 knots in a 10/12 knot breeze.

John,

If you're not sure of your own skills or really feel uneasy about delivering her home on your own, I'm sure there are a few visitors to this board that would be more than willing to help you. Ask for crew and see if you get any takers.

Thanks to all for the wonderful advice.. and to those of you who responded via e-mail a special thanks. As a matter of fact Catherine, I did receive an offer from an experienced CD25 owner who offered to crew(I think I may be more like the crew than captain !). SO again a special thanks to the watchers on this board who took the time to share their knowledge and encouragement.

Why do I keep hearing the theme song to Gilligan's Island in my head??
