CD30K stuffing box

Post by Steve Lutcha »

I am the new owner of a CD30K and when I launched it two days ago the stuffing box leaked badly for about 24 hours and then slowed to a managable trickle. During that time I was looking for the stuffing box and could not find a way to access it. Can anyone offer some advice on this subject?

Steve,

It depends on what engine/transmission/shaft you have. If it is a Universal 18/Herth tranny/straight shaft, first get a 12 to 18" piece of 1/2" electrical conduit. Put a blanket or small piece of light carpet over the engine(this keeps YOU from hanging up on the engine!). Lean in over the engine from the forward end, place the conduit against one of the nibs on the locking ring of the stuffing box and tap it with a hammer to loosen. Then in the other direction, tap on the adjust ring to tighten the stuffing box. Try about a 1/4 turn to start, depending on how much of a drip you have. When finished, re-tighten the locking ring with a couple of taps in the opposite direction.

Now, if on the other hand, you have a MD7A engine and a "V" drive, I don't know what to tell you. You may be able to access the stuffing box in the same way, and I would certainly try that first before I climbed down into the lazzerette. Maybe others on the site can help if you do have a "V" drive.

AS CAPT.STUMP ADVISED IT VERY MUCH DEPENDS ON WHICH ENGINE, WITH THE
YANMAR 2GM THE ONLY WAY TO ACCESS THE STUFFING BOX THAT I FOUND WAS
THRU THE COCKPIT LOCKERS, BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS SOMEONE THERE TO
HELP YOU GET BACK OUT.....

Steve and Dave,

On the Md7B engine w/v-drive, the packing gland (hope this is what Steve was talking about leaking, and *not* the stuffing box itself..it is almost impossible to even see on the MD7B)) is under the engine, and easily reached from inside the cabin. It has two collars with a knurled surface, made to be adjusted with a wrench (Spartan Marine) or a screw driver or the pipe method David talked about. All work fine. Basicly, the narrow ring is a jamb nut, and should be backed off a few turns so that the packing nut can be adjusted.
If the packing nut seems to be bottoming out in it's travel (ie: you can not adjust it tight enough to stop the dripping down to about 1 per 10-30 sec.), then it may need to be repacked with flax or teflon impreganted goop (I have used both. The results with the teflon are far better, but it sure is a hassle to put in).

Cheers!

Thanks for the help. I was able to sqeeze into the starboard cockpit locker and tighten packing nut. It took about an 1/8 to 1/4 turn and the steady stream stopped immediately. I don't think that will be to much, but I'll check it tomorrow to make sure it isn't dry.
