Edson Sheave Pin Dimensions - FYI

Post by Ken Coit »

Larry Mace asked off-line how I mangaged to determine the right size pins. Here is an abbreviated version of my answer with a few embellishments:

I relied on a person in Customer Service, Ken Martin at (508) 995-9711 . Knowing that we had a chain and cable setup, his basic questions were: " Do you have an assembly directly below the pedestal?" and "How many sheaves are there?" I believe the assembly under the pedestal always comes with 4 sheaves. Their drawing for the CD-36, S-84-1036-1, shows the 913-4 assembly under the pedestal.

The part number they shipped is: 960-A-1315A. They do not seem to be listed in their October 1998 price list. On the shipping papers it is shown as the proper SS Sheave Pin for 847, 776, 620, 881. and 743-4" sheaves. The pin diameter is 3/8"; they are 1 11/16" long and include holes for cotter pins on both ends. New cotter pins are supplied. They also show sheaves in their catalog that use 5/8", 1", and 1 1/4" pins, but these are sheaves 6" and more in diameter. The smallest sheave in the catalog is 3" in diameter and it uses the 3/8" pin as well. The 912-4 and 913-4 sheave brackets both use 4" diameter sheaves.

If your pins have not been replaced since your boat was built, they are bronze and are getting thin. Replace them now while you have a cool head and sea room. $44 is cheap insurance for continued steerability.
