1977 Cape Dory 28 HIN with unexpected Manufactures Identification code
Greetings,
I'm buying a 1977 Cape Dory 28 and stumbled across a mystery. The seller has been great, provided copies of previous bills of sale, state registrations, and a photo of the HIN on the transom, but can't provide an answer to my question and I just can't find an answer myself. The thing is that it doesn't have the expected CDN manufactures identification code at the beginning of the HIN that I was expecting instead it is CPD. When I research this it looks to be an active manufactures identification code for Coastal Cruisers Pontoon out of Ohio. Could anyone shed any light on what's happening here or if anyone's seen this HIN before.
I've contacted the Coast Guard and everything squares up with them so I believe the answer lay somewhere in the long history of this beauty and Cape Dory Yachts and my ignorance of what the expected manufactures identification code should be for a 1977 CD28. I'd just love to know the history or story behind the multiple HIN manufactures codes.
thank you in advance

They all start with CPD. I'm curious how you got the information that they started with CDN?

When researching the vessel I'm buying and looking into HIN's in general I went to this website https://uscgboating.org/content/manufac ... cation.php and searched for Cape Dory manufacturing identification codes for Cape Dory, As I said in my first post I suspected that I was wrong to assume what it was weird especially after contacting the US Coast Guard and them being okay with its registration and deregistration, I was going on the assumption that the company Cape Dory Yachts under Russell Handler was using CDN according to the website above so when I saw the CPD i was puzzled. I'll be the first to admit I don't know anything about the history of these vessels or the company, but I am determined to learn.Carl Thunberg wrote: ↑Nov 20th, '24, 14:20 They all start with CPD. Russell Handler's company was formed after the original Cape Dory ceased operations. He bought most of the power boat designs and only lasted a few years. If you follow the link at the top of the forum page to the CDSOA Home Page you'll find a link to a brief history of the Cape Dory boats. Welcome and good luck with your new boat.

From our Home Page choose Cape Dory Web Pages, from the drop down choose Cape Dory History and Models, select How to Decipher Your Boats HIN.

Thank you all for the quick response. I will take the time to read all about the history found on the main site and sub menu, interesting to see service and sales literature also. Living in Nova Scotia I never thought I'd be in a position to buy and import one to Canada for myself. CPDF0123M77B
