Update on Leoma

Post by John Stone »

John Doyle has nearly completed a very impressive voyage in his Cape Dory 30 ketch Leoma. He left Baja Mexico in April and sailed 2,500 miles to Hilo Hawaii in 28 days. Then in May departed Hawaii and is now about 500nm from landfall in California. He reports he had several days of no wind but is now making 6 knots. He said the boat is sailing very well.

It's a tremendous accomplishment to single-hand a CD 30 that far. Some fine seamanship. Hopefully, he will post a full report on the forum after he makes landfall.

Below is screen shot of his location sent via Garmin In-Reach @ 34.8°N 128.8°w

Thanks for the update. JD has had to deal with several things which would have discouraged a man of lesser resolve. He managed to overcome those obstacles and is fulfilling his dreams. I wish him the best of luck and anxiously await his safe arrival in port.

Got a satellite text from John Doyle this morning. He was about 180nm from Moro Bay. Wind NNW at 20 gusting 30+. Broad reach. Being chased down by an approaching gale winds with forecast for wind to veer a bit more northerly and then a close reach. Thinks he might make it into port before it arrives.

Concur. He has been very determined to overcome all kinds of difficulties and obstacles to get his boat ready, develop essential offshore skills, and make his own reality. Most people would give up or find excuses to decide their goals are unobtainable. He is a good example of relentless determination personified. If it was easy everyone would do it.

It’s been nearly two and a half days since JD’s last reported position. I would expect landfall has been made. It would be nice to have confirmation.

Yes. He safely arrived Moro Bay, CA. He put in a whole lot of sea miles in the last couple months. Excellent seamanship.
