Typhoon Rudder Repair

Post by Robert »

No luck with the search so I'm seeking info regarding rudder repair. I found the top of the rudder to be separating from the rudder shaft. The lower portion seems to be firmly attached. Where to start? How is the rudder fixed to the shaft? How do I remove the rudder assembly? Thanks for all replies. Robert

Robert:

The Typhoon rudder shaft is attached to the rudder with an armature that looks like a capital "E". The three ends of the "E" are welded to the rudder shaft, and then the rudder is built around it.

To remove the rudder, you need to take the tiller off the top, and remove the heel fitting at the keel - it is attached with three or four bronze pins that are pressed through the keel, and usually faired into the hull with some polyester resin.

It sounds like your keel has started to delaminate - so you might be able to dry it out and fill any voids with epoxy. If the loose rudder has caused damage to the armature - breaking the weld at the top of the "E" - then life gets more complicated.

Compass Custom Yachts owns the Typhoon molds, but they just sent the rudder mold to Nauset Marine to make a rudder for another customer. I haven't talked to Nauset, but sent another CD owner to them yesterday for a new rudder.

Someone once posted a source for the plastic bearing that fits over the rudder shaft below the tiller, but I don't recall who it was.

Good luck, and please post your solution.

I replaced my rudder last year. (Nauset Marine made the new one for me.) I was able to lift the old rudder up and out without removing the shoe from the keel. However, I did need to trim about an inch from the top of the new rudder in order to install that without removing the shoe. The end result seems to be fine.
