Perko strainer

Post by Ken Schwinger »

I have a problem with my Perko strainer,my CD 27 is new to me and when I ran it on the hard all was well with the cooling and all. The perko strainer was not hooked up when I bought the boat this last fall ,so I thought I would hook it up when I launched it. Well the perko strainer is a problem ,when it is hooked up water does not come out the exaust but all is ok when I run the water straight to the impeller with no strainer. The strainer is not blocked up as I can blow water through it no problem. I am now runining the engine with no strainer I don't feel good about this but am not sure what to do ? Does any one have any ideas on my next move. Thanks Ken

Ken,
Is the strainer above the water line? Try filling the strainer prior to starting the engine. This was necessary in my previous boat when motor-sailing after heeling enough to let the intake to the engine come out of the water. She would suck in some air and the strainer needed to be primed.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU COULD BE LOOSING THE SUCTION, CHECK THE RUBBER GASKET
WHERE YOU OPEN THE STRAINER,IS THE STRAINER ( GLASS OR CLOSED TYPE) FILLING WITH WATER WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING?? TRY SEALING IT WITH
A PERMATEX TYPE GASKET SEALER TO CHECK, IF THAT LOOKS TO BE THE PROBLEM, YOU CAN GET REPLACEMENT GASKETS.

GOOD LUCK
