Changing starter motor, CD27, YSM8

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Sounds like my starter motor is "crapping out". I'm pretty sure it needs to be changed and the yard mechanic came to the same conclusion only he can't get to it for a few weeks. So I'm thinking of doing it myself. Engine access on the CD27 can be kind of tight so before I go any further with this particular project I'd like to know how difficult it is to change the starter motor on the YSM8 on Sine Qua Non. I'm not an electrical genius but I'm pretty handy with tools.
Thanks,
Warren

It's not all that complicated; two wires and two bolts. It is much easier to get to if you remove the alternator first.

The manual says to check the brushes (there are four, located under a cover at the back of the motor) if they are less than 9.5mm long. Personally, I would buy a rebuilt starter and swap it out.
