I would like to know if dodgers for a CD 27 are a good idea. I had a 27 for 15 years, and it always seemed small for a dodger. Now after having owned a CD 36 with a dodger for a short period of time, I grew to like them. I now own another CD 27, and I am interested again. I am interested in other's experiances.

Re: Dodger for CD 27
Steve,
The 1st time I ever had a dodger was on my CD-27 Lady Jane. It convinced me that I would never have another boat without one. I now have a CD-36 and it has a dodger.

Steve:
I don't think the 27 is too small for a dodger. The benefits clearly outweigh any drawbacks. You can see my CD27 with a dodger at:

My CD27 came to me with the dodger and it is great. Its benefits bacame clear to me when I first delivered Second Chance during the three wettest, rainiest days of June, 1998. With a tiller, you can sit under the dodger and steer when it is raining if you want to. Also, you can sleep at night with the companionway slider open when it is raining--the dodger keeps the rain out. The 27 can get a little wet when beating into a fresh breeze with a chop, and the dodger keeps the cockpit a bit drier.
Considerations: You need to be a bit careful about the adjustment of the topping lift so the boom doesn't chafe the top of the dodger. Also you have to duck quite a bit when ascending or descending the companionway because the dodger can't be very tall, limited by the height of the boom. That's probably the single largest drawback, but not a very big one. To compensate, my dodger folds forward, so for periods when it is inconvenient to duck all the time (loading gear, cleaning, working on a project) you can fold it down. Then when you want it up, it's simply a matter of pulling it up and tying it taut.
Mine is an Island Nautical with the round side windows. I believe they have the patterns.

Re: Dodger for CD 27
I agree with what Bill wrote pretty much word for word. If your sitting in the aft part of the cockpit the dodger "may" impair your sight to a very minor degree. Like Bill, if the weather is good, I just pull 2 strings and fold the dodger down and its out of the way. It sure is a nice thing to have on the cold, wet and windy days when the spray in the face is getting a little much.Bill Goldsmith wrote: Steve:

Re: Dodger for CD 27
TIA MARI--our CD27--had two Island Nautical dodgers, which I considered essential gear for sailing the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to the protection from raw weather, we slept with the companion way boards & hatch opened during summer cruises. Protection from the sun for the mate was also a major factor.
Island Nautical had a Boat Show special which included a dodger & cockpit shade (attached to aft end of dodger & backstay) for the price of the dodger. Good deal. They know Cape Dory Brown.
OBTW, RESPITE, our CD330, has been outfitted with a hard dodger.
Best wishes,
Mitchell Bober

Re: Dodger for CD 27
Just sailed 165 nm, Maine to Rhode Island, in some of the lousiest weather you could ask for...dodger saved my soul...wouldn't be without one, and on a CD27, makes a pretty boat prettier (my humble opinion).
