Cowl vent gaurds/sissy bars
Has anyone installed either the stainless steel cowl vent gaurds or sissy bars (I think that's what they're called)for something to hang on to while working up at the mast or moving up front in rough conditons? If so, how has it worked out for you? I'm leaning towards the cowl vent gaurds cuz' there just isn't a ton of room on a CD36 up there and I have twice knocked off the cowl vent in passing....they don't float.

You could attach a lanyard to them...if you knock one off, you then still have a good chance it will stay attached to the dorade.Patrick Turner wrote: they don't float.

That's a good idea, but I would still like to have something else to hang to while working up there in lumpy seas.....besides the mast itself.

Have you considered using a bronze or stainless cowl vent that is screwed into the deck plate and locked with a screw? Have you considered additional hand rails? The stainless grab rails would be appropriate on the 36 aesthetically. Not so on our 30 that's why I use the screw in cowl vent. I think you have several good options, all feasible. The screw in cowls would be the easiest solution but not necessarily the cheapest.

John,
I have thought of the screw in type cowl vents...as you say...they are expesive. They are about the same cost as having stainless vent gaurds made which would protect the vent and provide some handhold. What other hadrails are you suggesting....on the mast or coach roof....?

Just typical coach roof teak handrails made to match the originals. Simple to make yourself and that would save some money. That savings would allow you to buy brass cowl vents or stainless for a few bucks more. Then you would have the best of both worlds.Patrick Turner wrote: John,

Patrick,
I just bought a 33 that has them already. I thus far have liked the setup and I think it looks salty. As to how to install, I can not help there. Ask your brother what he thinks, he has already sailed with me. Good luck with your 36, I hear it is nice.
