Upon inspection of my 1981 CD30, I discovered that the sheave
pins were made of brass. One pin was nearly worn through, which
could have resulted in a steering failure! I called Edson and they advised me to change all four pins immediately, and sent me new SS
pins. Anyone with the same steering system should do an immediate
inspection to see if the sheave pins were like mine!
Also I noticed that the quadrant was rubbing against the motor
control cables.( They feed through the middle of the quadrant) I am going to design a different rudder stop, as this was a poor configuration... any idea's?

Edson steering warning!

Re: Edson steering warning!
I take it that this is pedestal steeering with a quadrant on the rudder post, as opposed to the Edson worm steering system fitted to my 1979 CD30 ? Hope so.

Re: Edson steering warning!
I passed this same information along last year when I lost steering on a short trip on the Chesapeake Bay. Using the emergency tiller on my CD36 was quite an experience, fortunately I had run an emergency drill on its use and discovered and fixed the problems inherent in the system. I agree it is importnt for all to check the sheave axles IMMEDIATELY.Bob Emmons wrote: Upon inspection of my 1981 CD30, I discovered that the sheave

Re: Edson steering warning!
Boat U.S. warned of this back during the winter. Apparently, all Edson pedestal systems through '85 (I think), which means almost all Cape Dorys, had the brass sheave pins. These have started failing, and *everyone* with such a system should inspect these pins, and change them to stainless.Bob Emmons wrote: Upon inspection of my 1981 CD30, I discovered that the sheave

Re: Edson steering warning!
I also has this problem but fortunately I had warning before the pins actually broke - the steering system would make grinding noises while being turned but when inspected, half worn brass pins were found!
Replaced with stainless as recommended by Edson. (they know this problem!)

Murray,
The answer is "yes" in case it wasn't made clear.
