Still Sailing in Connecticut 2022 and low tech heating

One last trip over to Long Island.

Reefed the main and partially furled the genoa and headed SW with NE wind 15-20 knot.

Arrived in plenty of time to tie up to a mooring and secure everything for the night.

It got down to 45 or so and the NE wind remained at about 15 knots all night.
After dinner I warmed up a brick on the alcohol stove for a while to heat up the cabin.
I turned it off before turning in.

There was an old post on this forum that gave me the idea for using the brick which seemed to help as did keeping the tea kettle on top of the brick. I did not get the "marine brick" at West Marine, just used a regular (clean) brick.

Autumn sailing around here has been very good this year. The wind is often stronger and more constant than the Summer months. One more week before haul out.

I've used an inverted clay flowerpot in the stove with good results for a cheap and dirty solution. I prefer the Little Buddy by Mr. Heater if you don't mind spending more for a purpose-built product. If you use Little Buddy, you will want to use it in the sink or someplace similar that will help it from capsizing and won't start a fire.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for that info about the heater. Something to consider for next year.
We've had a pretty warm Autumn here in Connecticut but most years a heater would really help from September onward.

The inverted flower pot works very well and helps dry out the cabin. And if you put a container of Sake on the flower pot, it keeps it at just the right temperature!
