1981 Typhoon Insurance

Post by charlesaf3 »

So it looks like Geico won't insure my Typhoon since its over 40 years old at this point.

I assume a lot of cape dory owners are in this postion, who do people use for insurance?

I use Geico/ Boat US Insurance
It was $125 for this year.
I buy liability only.
It includes towing through TowBoat US for up to $3000 of towing.
I have a 30 foot Intrepid 9-Meter

I have geico for my other boat, but they won't insure the Typhoon since it's over 40 years old evidently. Looks like progressive might, though I've heard bad things... and checking with Erie.

Hi Charles,

I own CDc #38 which was built in !977. I have been with Boat US/Geico for over 20 years and they just
renewed my insurance this month. My CD is 45 years old so I don't understand why they won't cover your TY, especially if they also cover your other boat.
Good luck,
Dana

My Intrepid 9 Meter is from 1979. It is 43 years old.

Geico / Boat U S insurance for the past 3 years.

Not sure if they have a rule about over 40 years old but if so then maybe I got coverage because I first applied when she was just 40.

Me too on having Geico-Boat/US on my Typhoon. Me too on the boat being under 40 when the insurance policy was written but subsequently renewed after she turned 40. Based on your experience, I guess I won't be shopping for new insurance! My CD22 has no insurance, but I don't feel the need for it since she is kept on a mooring in a mostly isolated location and there is little chance she is going to be responsible for damage to anyone but herself. My Typhoon is kept in a marina, and marinas have rules about insurance, so she has it.

If you find a company willing to insure your boat please share it with the forum, as I'm sure there are or will be more people in your situation.

Smooth sailing,

Jim

I bet it's based on the fact I just inquired, and the boat hadn't been previously insured with Geico? Even though my other boat has.

Progressive online gave me a quote, I'm waiting to hear back from Erie

I was told by Geico / Boat US I needed an in-water survey. (For my 1987 CD 30 MkII it would have been about $90 a year.) I asked why when I only wanted liability. They told me it's because I may decide to add hull insurance later. That might make sense if it was true. For various reasons I spent $276 (for liability only) with Progressive thru NBOA. No survey. This was mid August.

Rick,

Good point.

On my former boat - a 1976 Sea Sprite 23 Weekender - my homeowner's insurance covered the boat - liability for the boat.

There was a limit on boat size and outboard motor size but my boat: 23 feet long and 6 hp outboard fit the criteria.

Try Progressive. They insured my 1984 for a much better deal than Geico/Boat US.
