Cockpit Sole Cracks Fix

Post by hinmo »

Need a high level overview of steps to fix cracks in cockpit sole of a weekender Ty. They are near one of the drains. The deck still seems solid around the cracks.
I dont need a perfect fix, just a working fix.

(ex - grind out and fill west system epoxy and microfiber, sand then Brightside?)?

A picture might help. Sometimes you can get away with tracing the outline of the individual cracks with a Dremel, creating a "V" that you can then fill with thickened epoxy. It really depends on how interconnected they are and of course, whether you have saturated core, in which case you have a bigger project. If you go the Dremel route, it helps to rest your hand against a short length of 2x4 or whatever thickness gives your hand support.

Here is a video with step by step instructions on getting rid of spider cracks. Doing the same thing to my Typhoon now.

Don't use "softness" as your guide to whether the core is undamaged. Tap the cockpit sole with the plastic handle of a screwdriver and listen to the sound. It is quite easy to tell the difference between a waterlogged or rotted core and a good core by the sound of it. Rotted core has more of a dull thud to it, while solid core has a sharper sound. Do it all over the sole and try other areas of the deck as well that are unlikely to be soggy to give yourself a good benchmark. (For example, try areas near the top of the crown of the deck away from any holes that were drilled through the deck where water could have intruded. While you are at it, learn the difference in sound between solid glass (the hull is not cored as the decks are) and cored laminate, and learn the difference in sound between areas where bulkheads are glassed to the hull and where the hull is an unsupported area. It is a skill that will not only help you on this project but serve you well in the future.

I saw this on the news. Very sad. So many boats, cars, and buildings lost. I'm sorry yours appears to be one of them.

Oh how awful! And to add insult to injury it was after you did the repairs, too. Sorry to hear about it.

I saw the fire on the net. Truly a nightmare for boat owners. There are sources for used masts but your best bet might be Dwyer in Bristol R.I., if you are not inclined to initiate a search.
