Repowering CD28

Post by Growler »

Hello all, we are the new owners of a 1990 CD28. We are considering repowering her in the next few years. She has a TAMD41A with 2440 hours. (She’s a bit smoky at start up but runs well.) I have a couple of questions.

First, any suggestions for how to cost effectively mitigate the exhaust at start up? (Our mechanic suggested rebuilding or replacing the injectors.)

Second, for those of you who have repowered your CD28, what engine did you use?

Thank you.

Mine has a TAMD40C. When I bought mine, our mechanic specifically told me before I started it the first time not to be surprised if the TAMD smokes on startup. The initial startup smoke quickly dissipates and it runs clean thereafter. If initial smoke is your only concern, you may not be as close to re-powering as you think. Obviously, listen to your mechanic. They know a whole lot more than I do.
