cd31 diesel engine water pump

this is evidently my year for engine trouble - the fresh water pump on my universal M25 failed - it was quite spectacular: running perfectly one second and the next loud screeching noises as the pump seized up and the fan belt slipped - luckily this happened within minutes of leaving the dock so i could anchor in the channel and later get towed to my mooring - new pump already ordered - i'm posting this for general information and paticularly because there was no warning and as far as i can see no way to have anticipated this - the pump has permanently sealed bearings - it is 16 years old but nevertheless it makes me think - short of carying a spare, i don't see a solution
