Foot pump for CD 27 sink

Post by jfischgrund »

While flushing out the water tank via the foot pump that empties the water tank into the sink I found that it has no pressure -- it just flaps. Does anyone know where a replacement pump or replacement parts are available for that pump? I believe it was an original. Thanks!

It's possible this will fit. You'll need to figure out exactly what kind of pump you have. - Regards, Jean

Thanks. I hope to take it apart this weekend and maybe the spare parts in the link you sent me will fit. Thanks again.

I had a problem with my galley sink foot pump a few years ago.
I bought a new one for about $90.
A fairly simple replacement but not an exact same fit because I had to drill and tap two of the bolt holes in the mounting bracket that was on the boat for the original.
Hodges Marine was the vendor and I did have a problem with the pump after one year and they sent a free replacement no questions asked which has worked flawlessly ever since. Current cost is $95.

Pay attention to if you need a Left hand" or "right hand". I needed a "right hand" pump.

Thank you so much -- the photos are great. I wasn't aware of the left/right distinction so now I know to be careful about that. I'll let you know how it turns out,
Thanks again! JOE

I seem to remember that you can take those pumps apart and change the configuration if it is the wrong "handedness". Isn't that right?

HI Jim,
Yes. I do think that one could disassemble and then reassemble to change the pump from right hand to left hand.
I had a leak in mine (the first replacement) the source of which that I could not determine so I got a warranty replacement. Makes me a bit gun-shy about trying to disassemble or repair these. Especially when they cost just $95 new.

First, thanks to everyone for their help. Here's a picture of the old one. Before I order a new one, has anyone had any experience with the Whale gusher vertical hand pump that mounts on the sink itself? The fit for the foot pump is very tight since the new engine that was installed last year had to be moved forward a couple of inches.

I assume you mean this one:

My CD22 has a Whale V. We don't use it a whole lot, but it works fine. It appears to have been on the boat forever and is still going strong. The vertical action is not as easy to operate as the back-and-forth action of the Flipper model which we had on another boat. The Flipper takes up more counter space, though, and after a while we had problems with the Flipper losing its prime and needing to be replaced, though maybe that's because we used it as a salt water pump. If you are going to need to pump a lot of water frequently, and have the counter space, I'd go with the Flipper just because the action is more convenient. If you only plan to use it infrequently, and if counter space is at a premium, go with the Whale V. Or if money is no object, you have plenty of room to swing the pump lever, and you want to go with the traditional brass look, check out the Fynspray Traditional.

Smooth sailing,

Jim

Installed and working. Thanks especially to Ken Easley whose help on this forum was invaluable. Very tight fit due to the engine being moved about 3 inches forward when it was installed last year. Good thing I have a son who has a lot more flexibility and dexterity than me! Now for some clean-up and touch-up around the opening.
Thanks again to everyone on the forum who helped.

Very good thread. Lots of valuable information. One comment. While Whale sells both a left hand and right hand pump, the pump is in fact reversible. The only difference in a right and left hand pump is which side the inlet and exhaust valves are on. To reverse it take the front rear covers off, carefully pulling the valve assembles off and flip the foot lever around. Then, switch the covers around reinstalling the valve assemblies. I applied a little silicone grease to all the rubber seals and o-rings. You do not have to take apart any of the diaphragm assembly or guts of the pump.
