who stocks datamarine knotmeters
My boat came with a Datamarine Corinthian series depth sounder and CDX. I would like to install a DCS 100 knotmeter as well. I cannot find a retailer that stocks this item as opposed to ordering it on an as needed basis. This makes a difference because Datamarine says that these instruments are temporarily out of production while they wait for some parts, and I want to launch in the next few weeks. Does anyone know of a retailer that actually stocks these instruments? I am in eastern Massachusetts, but anywhere would serve if they do mail order.
While on the subject, Datamarine offers both nylon and bronze transducers for these knotmeters. What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks.

Re: who stocks datamarine knotmeters
Voyager Marine Electronics in Essex, MA stocks Datamarine products. I purchased a new transducer from them for our Corinthian Series.Stan W wrote: My boat came with a Datamarine Corinthian series depth sounder and CDX. The bronze transducer is recommeded for wooden boats-plastic for plastic. We had a bronze and replaced it with a bronze for no other reason than that was what was in there originally.
Good Luck.

Re: Datamarine Dealers
Thanks Catherine.
While I cannot claim to have contacted every dealer on that list, the several I have contacted so far do not actually stock much, if any, Datamarine product. They just order from Datamarine if, as and when they get a customer order. Since Datamarine itself temporarily is out of stock of the knotmeter I want, I need a dealer that actually has some inventory on its shelves. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of Datamarine dealers cannot or will not make that investment. I will keep trying and report back.

alternatives to datamarine
In my search, I came across a source in a position to know, who I will refer to as "Deep Boat," who stated that the reason that Datamarine cannot fill orders is that it cannot afford to buy parts. In Deep Boat's opinion, Datamarine "ain't gonna be around much longer." If this is just an urban myth, set me straight. If not, who else makes nice simple round knotmeters, depth sounders, etc.?

Re: alternatives to datamarine
The SR Mariner Knotmeter on my CD27 fits your description - and SR Instruments still makes one like it - round, analog, self-powered (also digital stuff, and depth/wind instruments as well). I ordered some parts for my (discontinued) 1977 model today, and found them to be friendly, helpful and with parts in stock.

We went directly to the warehouse in Pocasset, MA to replace Corinthian datamarine parts even though production was not there any longer and now in CA. Email me if you want more info.

I've heard similar sounds regarding Data.
When we had a CD25 it came with a Moor Electronics knotmeter/log that was quite satisfactory and performed well.
Recently got a wind direction-speed indicator for our CD30 from the same manufacturer.
They are located in Albany and are responsive to inquiries/questions.
Their stuff works and looks o.k.
They are sold through Defender in our area.
Cost is modest compared to high tech alternatives available.
My humble opinion.

Re: alternatives to datamarine
I've seen Standard Communications instruments that look very similar in size to the DataMarine instruments we all have. I know that West Marine carries their line. I cannot speak to the reliability, toughness, etc...of these instruments. Take a look at their Horizon DS45 Depth Sounder and Horizon SL45 Speed/Log guages.
