I have seen that video. That's about where it is on my oar. I honestly don't see see how a little one way or the other is going to make a difference. Drilling the hole in the oar was not a big deal. Yore not going to hurt the oar. Not going to make it weaker.

I think getting the length close to right as you can and general shape and stiffness are the keys.

As far as my voyage to Maine. Hard to say. Will have to see.
