John,

I prefer the vacume pump from West Marine. Youve got much more working room than my install. Youll probably get your side pump to work just fine but its awkward and stiff on my engine and plus I can get the TMC atf fluid out too with the West pump. Also- The condo association we live in has two snow blowers. I use the device for them too. Its very neat- no spillage at all. A nearby garage dumps the oil for me. I give him a few bucks for doing it.

Its kind of freeky that the TMC40 only uses .2 liters of atf. Thats just not very much volume at all. In fact it worried me a bit when i first read the spec but then i noticed Beta uses the TMC 40 right up thru their 30 hp model ... so i figured the TMC40 attached to my 14 hp block is operating well within its design spec.

Fred. Copy all. Makes sense.

Thanks.

I haven't tried this yet but I will. You can also use an intermediate container if it is stiff enough to resist the vacuum pressure. I have a little 12V Vac that might be good for use on longer trips where I couldn't bring the big shop Vac from home.

Those little hand pumps have never worked very well for me.

I use one of these for the engine oil changes and the TMC 40 ATF. I just remove the top fill plug and stick the pump extraction wand/hose into the trans as best I can. You kind of have to jigger the wand around to get it down to the bottom of the trans housing.

Is there actually a drain plug on the TMC40 ?

I have a tiny funnel and a kitchen measuring cup and use that to fill the Trans and thats easy peasy on my boat - I do it sort of blind by reaching around the engine.

cheers
Fred, my Beta has a built in oil extraction pump. See attached photos. It's supposed to work pretty well. But, I have not used it yet. Your engine does not have that pump?

I think there is a drain plug on the TMC 40. Bottom left side looking forward. But I am not positive as I have not used it. I'll be back at the boat tomorrow and I'll take a look.

That slide-out removable pan is very cool.

For reference, below is the transmission oil quantity specs from the Hurth manual. My 1986 Westerbeke 21a has the Hurth HBW 50.

Thanks Bill. It's worked out very well. Every boat should come with a removable drip tray. If you are interested in seeing how it was built you can click on the link below and scroll down about 2/3 of the way. Subsequent posts have more pictures.
