alcohol tank fill instructions/leak?

Post by Jim Adams »

I have my tank 3/4 full, attach pump, pump a few times and the guage runs up to 30 psi and the pump starts to resist. Stop pumping and the guage quickly falls back to 0 psi. Something leaking here? Never used one of these before...

This assumes you have the three gallon pressurized alcohol tank.
...Sounds like the one-way valve in the air pump is shot. Get a new high output pump..it works 2x faster. Clip the pumps hose end on the alcohol tank, and pump up to 15 psi max. Disconnect the air pump, and the pressure should stay as you left it minus a little that will leak as the air pump is taken off. The tank is a three gallon tank, right? you need an air pillow in the top half of the tank..so you should not have more than 1 1/2 gal. in there max. Otherwise, you will lose pressure quickly, and will need repumping soon.

Thanks, Larry. I'll get a new air pump and give it a shot.

Jim,
I do not know what type of tank you have, but if it happens to be the seward unit the seal between the cap and the tank gets hard with time and needs replacing. Don't bother calling Seward for spares. They have abandoned the older alcohol stove lines to a parts retailer that hat has no parts. I replaced the seal with an 'o' ring, but it is affected by alcohol. It expands when exposed so I bought a smaller diameter than might otherwise be used, but one with a very fat cross section. It has worked OK for about two years. There is probably a better material on the market.
