cockpit leak

Post by len »

when water is in my cockpit, e.g. when a hose is running, some is dripping through (visible from the cockpit lockers) and the underside of the fiberglass is discolored - no loss of strength (yet) - there are some fine cracks in the gelcoat and nonskid near where it is leaking - i am thinking that's the source of the leak and imagining that the only solution is grinding out the cracks and fixing them

? anyone have any other thoughts

Could be leaking from the drain hose that passes through the locker (an easy fix) or could be just leaking (more hassle). Cape Dorys are famous for leaky cockpit sole (usually around the tiller post) and some pretty expensive repairs have resulted. If you do not have a spongy sole yet, the sooner you stem the tide, the better...Good luck.

My cockpit has recently started to creak when trod upon. Could this be a sign of core damage from a leak such as you describe? There have been no other indications.

Joel,
Creaking in the cockpit can be a sign of delamination, but not necessarily a soggy core. Delamination is common in older boats often resulting from the jumping around and dropping heavy things on the cockpit sole....A moisture meter is a good way to determine water intrusion, but if it is really bad, you can feel the flex and you'll know if it's soggy...A little creaking may not mean much, but if water is getting in, trouble will follow eventually unless you can stop the leak in time. The tiller post and drains are common problem areas. Good luck.
