My spouse surprised me with a Spinnaker for my 19' Cape Dory Weekender. I've tried sailing web sites but have found them confusing on this topic. It seems spinnakers are often meant for larger boats.
The marina I'm at will be working up a quote to do the work but I'd like to understand what's necessary and what's "extra" so I do the right thing.
Any input would be appreciated.

Newby needs spinnaker help

Re: Newby needs spinnaker help
Brian:
First, recall that jillions of small boats such as Thistles, regularly sail with spinnakers and a crew of two, so I don't think a Ty is too small for a spinnaker
The hardware required to fly a spinnaker differs with the type of spinnaker you plan to use. Do you have a cruising spinnaker? An aysmetrical? A "standard" symetrical?
Let us know and we can then offer appropriate suggestions.
By the way, if you're handy enough to operate drill and a thread tap, you can do the work yourself. Why help pay for the boatyard owners Mercedes?

Re: Newby needs spinnaker help
You'll need the following:
Spinnaker Halyard: 50' 1/4" Yale ULS w/swivel shackle spliced in
Spin Sheets: (Mine are orginal) 30' 5/16" braided (I'd use Yale Yacht braid)
Foreguy: 1/4" Yale ULS x ? w/small fixed bail (again original and I never measured it) maybe 25'
You'll run it back to the cockpit to a cleat on the coaming boards.
Topping lift: 45' 1/4" Yale ULS w/small fixed bail
You'll need to attach a small block above the forestay for the kite and one I think a little below the spreaders for the lift. The foreguy can run through the bow cleat back.
For the pole, mine is maybe 1" in diameter x 6'2" (J dimension). You could have one made or buy a kit from Boat US. Then there's the mast track and bail. I'm not sure what the dimesions are but I'd suggest getting a Schaefer catalog. They made much of the orginal equipment and I'm pretty sure they'd have that.
Pop rivets work well to mount the blocks. I just added two small cheek blocks on either side of my mast at the base in order to run the spin halyard and t-lift back.
You'll love the boat downwind with a kite. It's so much faster and handles a lot better.
Good Luck,
