Looking at a used Typhoon - Lead showing through keel.

Post by Ed »

Last weekend, I looked at a 1982 Typhoon. Overall the boat was in good condition. I noticed the lead is showing through in a couple of spots at the base of the keel. How big of a concern is this and any thoughts on repairing this problem. This is really the only thing I could find wrong with the boat other than normal wear. Thanks Ed

are you sure it was the lead? under the gelcoat the laminate appears gray. also a barrier coat might appear gray. the lead (in many it is cast iron)is encapsulated in the hull fiberglass mold which is laminate plus gelcoat and is 1/2 inch or more thick. if this is gone it could be replaced by laminate repair or epoxy, but i sure would want to know why it is gone and how it got gone!

What you almost certainly saw was the frp laminate. It's quite difficult getting gelcoat down in the lower keel area during layup. It has a tendency to be thin down there. It has probably been sanded a few times over the years as well.

Thanks, I am getting some prices on getting the boat repaired. I have a feeling this boat was left in the water to long in the fall which resulted in the damage to the bottom due to low water levels.
Thanks for you reponses. I'll let you know if I decide to purchase this Typhoon. Take Care, Ed
