screws too tight

Post by Chris Cram »

To All,
I am trying to change my genoa furling line. The unit is a Hood SeaFurl, which means I need to lower the housing around the furling drum in order to feed the new line through the hole and make the knot. The problem is the three set screws holding the housing in place. Someone overtightened them. they are large flat head style screws. So are there any pearls of wisdom out there? WD40 and ?

Re: screws too tight / maybe LOCTITE

Someone may have used LOCTITE threadlocker on the screws. CAREFULLY use a tourch to heat the screws ( approx. 200 - 300 deg.) and this will soften the loctite. When reinstalling, use the removeable style (blue). It is only necessary to heat the screw not the entire housing. Many people have used the permanent type not fully appreciating the term "permanent". Hope this helps.

Chris,

I think I recall that a tube Loctite was part of Harken's installation kit maybe Hood's as well?
