ramp launching a CD 22

Post by Clayton Wright »

I live in Eastern Washington, where there are many large and small lakes within trailering distance. Would love to get a CD 22, but haven't considered it due to the 3 foot draft. My sailing is going to be strictly weekend outings from the trailer. How practical is ramp launching this boat, really? Will I find many locations where I can't get it to float off? I'd love to hear any comments, as I'd much rather have a Cape Dory than a swing keel Catalina 22! Thanks

I'd expect handling the mast would be a bigger problem. All you need for the boat is enough water, the mast is going to take some muscle and finesse. A hinged tabernacle is a must.

Among those manufacturers who make boats specifically for ramp launching there seems to have developed a consensus of opinion that 20" of draft is about the upper limit for easy launching at a wide variety of locations. Once you get the stick up, you can launch the Dory at many sites; just carry a tongue extension and wade out to make sure you have the depth you need. That said, I wonder; If you're launching just for weekend use, will the extra effort of the Dory be worth it to you (the first time, "sure", but by the tenth time , "maybe not", lots of Catalina owners have modified their enthusiam by then.)
Since you mention a Catalina, I assume you're planning to buy a boat to meet your needs. Based on what I've seen, I believe that if CD were going to make a boat specifically for the trailer-sailor market it would be almost identical to the Rob Roy 23. I think Ted Brewer would agree
