I had to climb my mast today, and put some of my trust in the main halyard, which is pretty darn old (I also had a mast ladder, so had a little bit of back-up built in.) Anyway, it's really time to replace the running rigging on my CD 26. I'm not sure how the line specifications from 1986 translate to materials today.
Halyards:
Main. The manual says to use 3/8" x 70' prestretched dacron.
Jib halyard. The manual says to us 3/8" x 73' prestretched dacron. I have a roller furling head sail, so have only used the jib halyard rarely with the whisker pole. But, I see a value in keeping this line ready for use if I need a backup for the main halyard in a pinch.
For the halyards, do you have a recommendation?
Main sheet: The manual recommends 3/8" x 90' braided dacron.
Jib sheet: This is my favorite existing line on the boat. Soft on the hands, large diameter. The manual suggests 7/16" x 60' Braided dacron. I would love to figure out what this line is, and replace with the same.
For the sheets, what is your recommendation?
Thanks in advance

Re: Line recommendations
When I replaced lines on KAYLA, dropped the mainsheet to 5/16 since current cordage is a good bit stronger than 1980s line.
For jib sheets, my favorite for the feel is Samson Trophy Braid. Pick the size that works best with your winches.

Re: Line recommendations
When we replaced all of our running rigging on our 30 we went with the 1983 recommendation. I never though about the difference in strength. How ever as you get some arthritis in your hands you appreciate the larger line. I don't think I'd drop down in size. Dee

Re: Line recommendations
CD27 here(formerly of Herrington Harbor, I bumped in to a CD26 owner on P dock a few years ago).
Recently replaced the very crusty main and jib halyard. Went with Cajun ropes 3/8th inch. The line is supple, the cover feels soft in the hands, and it coils with ease(One reason I won't use New England Ropes sta-set and the like). I went with 80ish feet for the main for those times I run it back to the cockpit. The jib halyard is 75, since my boat terminates at the winch on the mast. You can order it with a shackle already spliced on, and the tailing end of the line has a small length where the core is removed and a loop with just the cover is spliced in. This made the already easy task of tying the old to the new even easier.
The owner Gary has been great to work with, too. Two thumbs up.
