Cockpit engine instrument panel....

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the panel that the Tach, temp, amp, start/glow plug swith components mount to? Mine is cracked and needs to be replaced, all the instruments are still working.

Any help would be appreciated.......

Dave;
One of the guys at Noank with a Cal27 replaced with a panel from Yanmar..very neat looking. The boat is First Alarm still on the hard if you care to have a look-see.

There is a Cal27 on the hard at NSY. 'First Alarm', the guy replaced
the warn out cluster with a nice unit from Yanmar. Don't know the cost but it looked very neat.

Dave:
The Universal panel is mounted on a white panel from Sailing Specialties (SSI, I think) which comes with no holes and is still available. On our previous 28 I bought on of these and used hole saws to fit the individual instruments instead of the engine panel. The SSI panel is stronger, and the installation looks neater, in my opinion. It worked very well.

I just threw the old Volvo panel out and cut a new one from aluminium, powder coated. The instruments were flush mounted in the new panel and a cover fitted to keep the sun off them when the boat is idle. I also got rid of both ends of the Volvo harness connectors and hard wired things to try and eliminate a frustrating no-go probelm.

Joe,

I've a page from SSI's catalog in front of me and a listing from Hansen Marine that shows the Novatron panels. It looks like the SSI panel is the outer one, and the Novatron panel is the panel that the instruments actually mount in. Now, for size and cost, and I am in business.

The thing that broke the panel that the instruments mount in was the decompression/fuel cut pull cable/handle. Someone broke it before we bought Hanalei a number of years ago. I don't like "broke" things on my vessel, so out this piece goes!!

Thanks for your help...

Dave,
Every CD30 I have seen or helped commission has had this problem, so don't feel bad. The plastic panel is too light to handle the torquing that some people must apply at some point (I mean, they are trying to kill that great noisy beast afterall!)heh..
On our boat, I have done nothing yet..but have plans to someday replace the panel, and remount it forward in the cockpit threshold, so that I can see it from the helm..novel idea, I know.

One option that I was thinking of was making the panel out of teak plywood, appropriately treated (both sides) and finished. Might spiff up the cockpit a tad.

Cheers!

I did what Larry has described about 7 years ago except my plastic panel is mounted within a recessed teak panel. The engine kill was mounted in the teak section for strength. Although I mounted the panel back in the same location. I installed my kill handle back in the teak panel in a similar fashion to the original but recently I bought a Fireboy remote control stainless angled extinguisher bracket that I am going to use for the engine kill handle so I will have room for a new gauge in the panel. I'm going to mount it in the aft section of the cockpit wall near the shore power inlet.

When I went to just the SSI panel I reinforced the kill cable mount with 1/2" teak ply backing, mounted with screws through the front of the panel. I'm not sure that would be necessary for Dave; someone had replaced our cable with an industrial strength model that was really too big. Anyway, the Universal insert is nothing like as strong as the white panel from SSI, as I recall.

Dear Commanding Captain Dave!

I had a similar problem on my CD27, GUILLEMOT, about six (6) years ago and being docked in Maryland, I had the great fortune to get the panel from SSI very easily and it was, as I remember, reasonably priced. The new one had a clear lexan door with a stainless steel hinge at the top and when I was on the boat on Monday last, it looks just a good as when I installed it.

Now my CD28< MOON CHILD, was modified by a boffoon when the previous owner had a new Yanmar 2GM20 installed the cheapest way in 1993. Just to give you some idea of the quality of workmanship, the boffoon used pieces of non-marine A-C plywood under the engine to supports for the new mounts (which were rotting nicely when I bought her in 1998), In 1999 new engine beds were laid and glassed in in a professional fashion. The boffoon also found it easier to take a piece of aluminum and mount the new Yanmar engine control panel over the hole where the old Volvo controls were mounted instead of buying a new SSI inset piece.

I try to protect the boat as much as possible from the elements, especially down here in the tropical sun. I got the catalogue from SSI and found they still make the panel, but the price is $100 retail. A little more than I expected to have to pay. You have to go to a dealer or distributor to get one unless there is none in your area and you can buy direct. I am going to visit BOAT/US and JSI who are dealers or distributors in the area to see what they will sell it for.

That teak or mahogany box is looking more practical all the time. However, you still have to varnish or Armada it, so who knows?

Just thought I would cheer you up, Dave!
