Looking for a new headsail for our CD36, I am thinking of using a 130% with the roller furler, and we have a full batten staysail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We will be doing coastal cruising and Bahamas.

Re: CD36 Headsail
Della,
I have two Yankee sails for my 36 and find that the larger (130 or 140) does not fly well when close hauled with the staysail up. As a result it sits in it's bag until the 18 year old 110 needs a little re-stiching. The larger sail is harder to tack around the headsail, especially in light air.

Re: CD36 Headsail
Della, What Matt says is true, but to me the extra drive is more than worth with. On any point of sail except hard on the wind the two together work just fine. If you're hard on it, you just drop the staysail so the genoa can set right. If you're going to be tacking you roll the genny up and go with the staysail. For crising the Bahamas and things like that you're going to be on one tack for a long time and the fact that the genoa doesn't self tack isn't a problem. When it's time to tack, you just roll it up, come about and roll it back out. When you get close to the harbor you roll it up and use the self tending staysail to tack in. I have a 140% genoa on roller furling and use it much more often than I used the yankee because it's so easy to make sail adjustments especially at night. Just goes to show it's different strokes for different folks. I wouldn't consider going back to a smaller genoa. If anything I'd go to a larger genny than 130%. It also corrects any weather helm you might have had. Choose what works for the kind of sailing you do.
