oil lamps in Cape Dory 25

Post by pjdurlach »

I am on the verge of purchasing a 1976 Cape Dory 25 sailboat. The current owner said he was going to install 3 brass oil lamps that were in the boat when he bought it, and took down when refreshing the interior. I don't really want these up; but, I would like to know if they are something I should ask to keep if they were original and a future owner might actually want. If yes, I will ask him to throw these in with the deal. Does anyone have any input on this? Were inside oil lamps original equipment?

Thanks in advance, Paula in Orlando

I don’t know if they were original but I recommend you take them. You may find you want to install them or you can sell them here. Decent oil lamps are getting very expensive. Some of the Den Haan lamps are wonderful and sought after.

I too would accept them. If they are good quality then you may like to have one for ambiance and they are always good emergency cabin and if windproof, anchor lighting. Plus, I mean, the zombie apocalypse... Just saying.

We really enjoy our oil lamp onboard Femme and use it often in the cabin and cockpit and once as an anchor light when the spare even quit. Never heard of oil lamps being original to CD's; it's doubtful I reckon.

Good luck with your new CD!

Take them for sure. For three years I sailed our CD 36 without interior electric lights. Even though finally installed a few LED lights I still mostly light our ship with kerosene lamps.

Thanks for the post, Paula. I'll buy them from you. I agree with the others. I used one almost every evening in my CD31, and now have a CD36 without any. PM me if you want to talk pricing and timing.
