Typhoon Newbie questions

Howdy All,

First, I'd like to say how grateful I am that this forum is available and hope to contribute in the future.

I recently purchased a 1972 Typhoon Weekender with a "Z" HIN number= 0041. I am pretty sure this is not the 41st typhoon built. Any suggestions for finding out which number boat I have? The builders plaque has no number on it and perhaps a PO removed it as a keep sake? Who knows. I'd like to put numbers on the plaque but am hesitant to put 41 on it.

I'd like to install cleats on the coaming aft of the winches....anyone have a measurement for distance between winch and cleat? Or whatever is comfortable? There are a pair of ronstan cam cleats installed inboard and are a bit awkward to cleat the jib sheets.

Lastly, for now, the after deck will need some attention. I'm thinking of re-coring with balsa or synthetic core and perhaps re-using the top skin (maybe not?) I have been reading Don Casey's books, watching online videos and trying to gather enough info to tackle this re-core job. Any suggestions?

Re: cam cleats for genoa. I recently installed Ronstan cams on the outboard side of the coaming. I first installed without risers, but then went back and added risers. I just put them where they seemed comfortable. I did angle them to account for the angle of the sheet from the winch. Unlike the original horn cleats, I through bolted. Use the type of closed nut so the end of the bolt would not cut clothes or skin.
Very easy to do as I am the world's least handy person.

The link to Roberto's info was useful, however because the HIN doesn't start with a CPD but with MSZ it appears to be a HIN issued by the state of Mass. in 1995 and was the 41st vessel issued an HIN that year.

I'll look into the the risers for the cam cleats.

MSZ is a designation for a homemade boat. It sounds like your boat might have been salvaged or the title was lost, no HIN number found. So maybe it was retitled as a homemade boat? How about posting a few photos?

I didn't take into account that the boat might have been a salvage. My other thought was that it didn't have an outboard (In CT any vessel under 19 ft that doesn't have auxiliary gas power does not need to be registered. Not sure if this is the case in MA).

It'd be nice to know what the original number is/was in the production line but may be a mystery.

Does anyone know if the Typhoon has a "hidden" HIN? They probably weren't doing that in 1972 though.

No, it's the reflection of the deck. It looks like it is, doesn't it?

there may be a hidden hin number inside the stbd quarter berth - my 1974 boat has one there as well as on the CD plaque (mine is a plastic plaque whereas yours is metal - older model. looks like here have been many upgrades to the hardware.
