Well, maybe not. This past August this guy was looking for shade so he was hiding under my dinghy’s towing bridle. I think he may have been a decoy deployed by a great white to lull me into a false sense of security when jumping into the water.....only for his partner in crime to administer the coup de grace.
If anyone is familiar with the species I’d be interested. This is one of the few fish in New England of which I am totally unfamiliar.

Re: Great white under my dinghy,
Look up images of a banded rudder fish. They vary in the color of the strip, from dark to almost not there. Dennis

I think you are correct. I’ve only noticed these a handful of time over the years. I looked at several sources on the web and I’m convinced you are correct.

Re: Great white under my dinghy,
I am thinking a Tiger Shark followed you home and has been living under Orion ever since. That is just one little Pilot Fish that is trying to lure you in to have a better look so you can figure out what it is. The shark gets a good meal and the little guy gets the scraps.
Seriously, it looks like a Pilot Fish to me. They always made me nervous when we saw them while diving. I always imagined their host was somewhere nearby, Steve.

Re: Great white under my dinghy,
It does look like him, but I would not think new england would be considered warm open tropical seas? It said they will follow ships.
