Leoma update 8/2020
Installed reduction gear and v-drive and went across the channel. I motored across to test the gears.( 5 hours) Problem unsolved. (I know they opened up the v-drive and put new bearings, seals and gaskets). The v-drive was 8oz. above the top mark. I drained some oil and on the way back I sailed most of the way but ran the engine for 1 hour . The v-drive was 4 oz. above the top mark and the reduction gear box was low. It's still sucking oil out of my transmission. When I got home I found a message from the Volvo shop. They did not open up the reduction gear because it's ridiculously difficult to get parts. They serviced it the best they could and couldn't see any shavings or any problems, They recommended I continue using it. I just sent them my report. I think I will start to save for a new engine. 3-4 years down the line. Good news : The new Blue Seas Add-Battery charging set-up is working good and I painted the lazerette. It looks so good. I have the stbd side clear so I can easily get in there to access the steering motor or the windvane parts. It's so nice and clean I could sleep down there. I was going to get a new brass plaque with the boat name and I found underneath it a previous name "GiGi". I like "Leoma" better. GiGi sounds like something out of a Franky Avalon movie. Oh, One more thing. I am installing a track for my storm trys'l. I think I will have problems sheeting . My backstays might be in the way. I could always attach it to the boom and sheet it that way . I was hoping to be able to secure the boom. I'll find out this week. I hope I didn't screw up again.

That’s frustrating. But you have a plan. And better yet you went out sailing. Offshore no less. That’s a lot more than most folks ever do. So good on ya.
If you want a trys’l then talk to your sailmaker about the trys’l sheeting angles. Your sailmaker needs to be competent. Fin keel boat tend to use a taller short footed trys’l. Boats like ours do better with longer footed trys’ls.
Typically the foot is not parallel to the boom. The tack might be several feet above the gooseneck so the clew sheets different than you might think. When you visit your sailmaker take an accurate diagram of the boat and hardware locations. Discuss these issues with the sailmaker. Then, a reputable sailmaker will take the measurements off your boat so the trys’l is built to work on the boat. This is where using a local loft pays off. This is not a mail order proposition. Competent sailmaker familiar with the requirements of ketch rig long keeled boats, who will take the measurements off the boat, and will check the post build fit of the sails on your boat. Buy him or her lunch and have him/her help you set it on an afternoon sail. Mention that desire before you pay for the sail.
I have never sailed a CD 30 ketch, or sloop for that matter, But I am confident it can be worked out if you want a trys’l. I have sailed ketches though and they often heave-to quite well under a reefed mizzen and stays’l or storm jib. Investigate and research this carefully. Look at some books written in the 1950s and 60s when ketches and yawls were very popular.
Harry Pidgeon wrote about this on his 34’ yawl Islander. He circumnavigated twice in the 1920s. It a great book BTW and your bound to pick up some tips.

I think this trysail will be ok. I fixed the name plate. Going sailing now for a few hours. With my sister and her family

I can maybe hook you up on a reversing gear and v-drive. I believe I still have them. Pulled off of my Cape Dory 30C about two years ago. The MD7A went bad and I saved a few parts. The transmission ect was not leaking. I converted to electric which has worked very well for us. Let me know if you have an interest and I'll make sure it is still in my shop. If you pay shipping I'd be willing to let you check it out. Sort of a try before you buy. Dennis, not a full member of this site and don't know if I can message. Let me know. I have other parts also. One cylinder had a hole in it.

I am in Virginia, so shipping may be more than you want to pay. My wife ships sheep wool all over the country so she has an idea at 40lbs will be about $100 to your side of the US. I wish I could guarantee you it was perfect but I can't. Dennis
