CDSOA Northeast Fleet events for 2020 won’t happen

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

CDSOA Northeast Fleet,

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I don’t think any CDSOA Northeast Fleet events will be taking place this year and we should continue social distancing. (NJ is second only to NY in the number of people with coronavirus and the number of deaths, so the State will be later to open up than other states. As of today, 7 May 2020, NJ had 133,635 confirmed cases and 8,801 deaths; between 200-300 people die from this coronavirus everyday in NJ.)

We will probably not be launching Realization, but if we do, it’ll be late in the season so we really won’t be traveling anywhere with our boat.

Stay safe, healthy and have a happy summer,

We have adequate separation between boats at the marina, and people have been really good about wearing masks and maintaining distance on the docks, although it's early in the season.

We're figuring that the quiet anchorages of the Boston Harbor Islands are safe. Anchorages up and down the coast, too. Yacht club mooring fields have plenty of distance between boats, and we can avoid the launches and use the dinghy. We'll miss the soft serve places.

Most of the clubs open on Memorial Day... I'll start calling around, to the clubs and to the harbormasters, to see how they're dealing with the situation locally.
Fair winds, Neil

I have my own mooring and usually single hand, so my only potential contact with other folks is going to and from the dinghy dock. My state's stay-at-home order expires on May 18th so hopefully there will be time for the local marina to launch my CD before Memorial Day. Single handing is probably one of the safest things a person can do for recreation during this situation!

Hi All,

MOONDANCE launched last Friday May 1st and is on a mooring in the East bay Osterville MA. I have sailed every day since and haven't been within 100 yards of anyone. Social distancing at it's best. In the pic we are ready to step the mast then back her down into the water at Princes Cove.

I hope that everyone else gets the opportunity to sail this spring and summer.

Like Neil and Narragansett Sailor, I'm hoping to have a sailing season--and perhaps to organize some simple, low-density float-ins. I almost always singlehand, thanks to Lynne's sea-sickness and lack of interest in sailing. And Creme Brûlée is on a mooring.

Scheduled launch date: First week of June.

Fair winds, and stay safe all!

Hi Cathy and all,
I was wondering if any interest showed up in a Maine Cruise this year. Did Joe Alteris get in touch with anyone? The reason we get together is to visit each other at cocktails and such, and the way it looks now isn't too promising for 2020. I know the demographic is more seasoned and maybe we should not even advertise or push it for this summer. As for launching Savannah, Anna and I are going to wait a bit, and see what is happening in the Maine area, and this can be done with the Maine cruise also, no rush. We might go in a bit later this year near the July end if things settle down. I'm not to sure how the local Maine folk might react to our Jersey license plates coming in though to get to our boat.

Bob, I suspect you were once at Riverbank Marina on the Toms River. Not sure we actually met. In any case you may be interested to learn that the folks down our way are just as uncertain as everyone else about conditions. Eventually things will clear up, but ...

Oh, I'm pretty sure I know exactly how Mainers would react to New Jersey plates, but the overwhelming majority of people get dis-armed pretty quickly once you talk to them. Keep in mind there are message boards all along the Maine Turnpike that say "Non-essential people entering Maine shall quarantine for 14 days". I'm working on essential infrastructure projects, so I go back and forth from Maine to New Hampshire almost daily. You will be expected to quarantine as the executive order stands right now.

Hi Bob,

Yes, Joe has been in contact. Right now it looks like he and Dream Catcher will be staying in Virginia waters — no Maine Cruise this year.

Don’t forget that each state will be “reopening” on their own schedules and some have quarantine requirements for anybody crossing their borders. You can’t just pull into port in another state and expect to be welcomed ashore.
