Request for advice, secure anchor to CD28 sprit.

Post by Freya »

Hi. Thank you for allowing me to join the brotherhood. Other that the lack of steerage in reverse, Freya and I are enjoying each others company swimmingly. I have 22# claw anchor that scares the hell out of me - i know i'd rupture a spleen if i ever have to retrieve it. The real concern is the way it bounces around on the sprit when sailing in high-frequency chop in SF bay. I'm having trouble deciding on what would be a simple, secure solution to 1) positively lock the anchor in place and 2) minimize the damage to the wood as the chain\swivel are dancing up there.

My issue here:

You might not like to hear this but the first thing I would do is to get rid of that huge swivel. I have never seen a need for one and that thing is a part of your problems.

The fact that there is only one small bit of line keeping the anchor from self deployment is scary. If that line were to chafe through, the anchor would drop and all your rode would run out. I hope the bitter end is secured.

Once the swivel is gone, you could use a chain stopper, of some sort, to secure the anchor and chain. You would want to pull it back pretty tight so that the anchor could not jump off of the roller. These things will eventually happen and not at the most opportune time. I also have a bridle that ties to the bow pulpit on both sides and has a hook in the middle. It is short enough that it holds the end of the anchor up off of the bow sprit. It is not there to secure the anchor but merely to lift the end of the shank up a bit so it will not rub.

A better anchor roller would also help keep things in place but a chain stopper should be your first concern.

You don't want that anchor to be flopping around or going over the side when not intended, Steve.

+1 on adding a chain stopper, or maybe a "tensioner" instead of a "stopper" so you can snug the anchor down against the roller.
+1 on removing the swivel.
If you don't want to replace the anchor platform with a better design, consider adding a bale to your existing setup to keep the anchor from jumping off the roller. Something like the one shown here (the bale is the curved piece sticking up on the left side of the photo):

Smooth sailing.
