Good to know, Ben. I may be overestimating how much weight the interior carpentry and epoxy will add. I'd sure like to end up at 60. Are you doing a sailing rig and if so which one did you choose? I went for the Bermudian rig rather than the sprit rig, mostly out of vanity and a little bit because of performance.

I installed the centerboard trunk and mast supports so that I can add the sailing rig at some point, but I'm not planning on building those parts at the moment. When I do, I'll probably go with the sprit rig, mostly because I'm curious about it, and also because the mast is smaller and easier to store and handle.

Mine came out to about 60 pounds, also. The two pieces are light and short enough to make putting it on and taking it off the cabin top not too much of a chore, but not something I'd want to do in rough water, since it takes both hands and they are rather cumbersome. I do recommend using a preventer to pull the boom as far as possible to the opposite side that you are working from for ease of handling the dink pieces, and to prevent scratching your cabin top.

When building your two-paw, if you flatten the top portion of the bow instead of leaving it rounded as per the plans, it will help the forward end nestle nicely and more stable between the "hump" of the midships hatch and the hump of the molded-in mast step box beam. It's like Cape Dory made that little notch specifically for accommodating a nesting dinghy!

I also recommend installing Taylor Made Gunnel Guard, which prevents scratching the cabin top when it's stored on deck, but also your topsides when the dink is in the water.

Thanks for those tips Joey. I'll try and get some of that Gunnel Guard. I definitely plan on having a way of swinging the boom out of the way for offloading the dinghy.

I'm also trying to figure out the best solution for a gunnel bumper on the dinghy. That Taylor Made product looks great, but sheesh it's expensive.

There is different stuff out there but I have not seen anything that works as well. That’s what is on our fatty knees, Sweet Pea and also what I used on the dinghy step up I built. If you get it you won’t regret it.

Work on the boat is progressing steadily. I got her turned over and cleaned up and fiberglassed Saturday. Yesterday I installed the frame for the foredeck and installed the mast tube. This was my first real deviation from the plans. Instead of the wooden mast step specified on the plans I installed the mast tube using a technique I learned repairing Lasers in college. I set the tube in with thickened epoxy and filleted around it. Then I ran six pieces of 10 ounce fiberglass tape vertically down the tube and fanning out on the hull around the mast step. This arrangement should be plenty strong for this boat. I also laminated the king post out of three layers of 1/4" plywood for a little extra strength around the mast. I made up the tank top and epoxied the inside of the tank. I'm going to install a Whale deck plate so I can access the space for storage and maintenance. Next up is installing the keel and deadwood, and then cutting the boat in half!

Thanks Jim. I don't feel talented but I have to say I was delighted with the shape of the hull after I trimmed the bottom and rounded the corners over. Really felt like a boat and not just some sheets of plywood stitched together.

Thanks John. Moving right along, I cut the boat in half and got the centerboard case finished and installed. Making the cut was a little nerve wracking but it worked out okay. Going to take a day off to work on Fayaway but I want to get her ready for fairing and painting by the next Monday since I'll be going back to work on Tuesday.
